The Payroll Specialist supports many of the strategies and initiatives associated with POET’s overarching PEOPLE strategy. Reporting to the Total Rewards Manager, the Payroll Specialist serves as the main payroll contact for the Sioux Falls offices and over two dozen biorefineries – an experienced and knowledgeable leader in the field who wholeheartedly embraces the role of ‘payroll owner’ within our Human Resources team.  This position provides excellence in customer service as it relates to payroll matters. The Payroll Specialist keeps leadership advised of outstanding issues and support needs.



  • Serve as the main payroll contact for POET team members and leaders – answering questions, validating/maintaining/entering data in HRIS System, and providing other services (i.e. generating reporting) as needed.
  • Process payroll-related external requests (i.e. child support, garnishments, payroll taxes, employment verifications, unemployment) in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Provide excellent team member and location support in regards to payroll/total rewards.
  • Maintain accurate and organized files, including the electronic filing of time and payroll reports.
  • Maintain current and develop new SOP’s as needed.
  • Assist internal and external auditors and manage vendors executing third party processes
  • Completes assigned audits, reviews and other location/department requirements.
  • Participates in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.

  • Interact with various internal departments, as well as vendors and tax agencies.

  • Associate’s Degree or equivalent in Finance, Business, Human Resources, or a related field required.
  • 3+ years of payroll related experience.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in UltiPro, or similar large-scale Human Resources Information System (HRIS), is required.
  • In-depth understanding of payroll concepts and practices, processing procedures, and state and federal withholding laws required.
  • Understanding of Compensation and Wage structure and benefits administration a plus.
  • Strong analytical, problem resolution, attention to detail, and mathematical skills are essential.
  • Excellent planning and project management skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills as well as the ability to adapt to change.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new software applications.
